Monsters Inc. in 3D Paper Quilling

Ahh, one of the greats to come out of the Pixar studio- Monster's Inc. This little project was most certainly the challenge that I wasn't expecting.

Monsters Inc.

Mike (6.5cm/2.5in eyeball with legs) was pretty straight forward to make, as was the sweet little Boo(5cm/2in). Sully however, (the crazy blue monster) was a whole other story...

Sully was literally a 'monster' to make! He absolutely towers over all my other minikins standing at a whopping 11cm (4.3in). Ontop of his height, Sully also needed to have a nice size to him. To do this, I made a good solid base underneath, before I covered him in his fur. After all the hand snipping/fringing I did to give Sully his fur, it may be time to invest in a proper fringer perhaps??

Futurama in 3D Paper Quilling!

How can you not love the foul mouthed, beer drinking, cigar smoking robot 'Bender' from the animated T.V series Futurama!! Not to mention Dr. Zoidburg, the alien lobster doctor, Lord Nibbler, and of course there had to be a brain slug somewhere in there! Ahh, Futurama- how do you come up with such crazy characters that are awesomely fun to turn into 3D quilling?!

Futurama

No special techniques were used in making these guys, unless you call patience a technique. As you can see each segment of Bender's arms and legs were made individually, so this took a little time.

I am super happy with how Dr. Zoidburg turned out. His facial features are hilarious, and his claws practically made themselves, being nice little quilled teardrop shapes.

It was the first time I have used a quilled streamer in my quilling. This worked perfectly around the brain slug to give it that softer, blobby look.

Brain slug is 3.5cm/1.4 in
Bender is 7cm/2.7 in
Dr. Zoidburg is 6.5cm/2.5 in
Nibbler is 5.5cm/2.1 in

All were made with 6mm and 3mm strips.

Spongebob Squarepants and Friends

Who doesn't love this cheeky, squarepant wearing sponge, who lives in a pineapple and hangs out at the crabshack with his friends Patrick and Squidward? Love them or not, they are super unique characters and gave me more than enough challenges to re-create them in 3D Quilling!

Spongebob Squarepants

These three characters: Patrick Starfish, Spongebob Squarepants and Squidward are the tallest, most detailed and most challenging of all of the Kurlikins characters.

Spongebob (9 cm/ 3.5in) took me a while to work out how to make a square shape using 3D Quilling techniques- which are essentially all circled shapes. Once I had that sorted, I then had to find a way of making him look spongy enough. The fantastic beehive technique done to the extreme came to the rescue- and I am more than impressed with the results.

Squidward (height: 11cm/ 4.3in) presented the challenge of getting the shapes right to make his interesting shaped head. Loads of sculpting, pushing, squeezing and patience finally got it looking right. I love how he turned out!

Patrick (height: 8cm/ 3.1in) although looking very straight forward as far as 3D Quilling shapes go- was a little more difficult then expected. His size and shape required a lot more strips then planned, and then a lot of moulding to get him into the right shape.

Despicable Me Minions

Who wouldn't want thousands of these little guys wondering around your house, helping you hatch your next nefarious deed? These little minions from the awesome animated movie Despicable Me are the latest minikins to join the Kurlikin's bunch!

Despicable Me Minions

Seeing that all these guys are the same shape and size, making them was a breeze. Once I worked out the best way of creating their bodies, it was simply a matter of making 3 of everything.

This is the first time I have tried quilling with a super wide strips that I cut myself- 3cm in this case, to make their bodies. It was much the same as normal quilling, but took loads more paper! So in doing this, their bodies are solid paper, making these little guys super sturdy!

Each of these adorable minions stand at 5cm (2 in) tall. Their bodies were made with an assortment of strip sizes. For their heads and bottoms, 6mm strips were used. To make their body, 3cm wide strips were cut. All the detail ie. eyes, feet and hands were made from 3mm strips.
